When we talk about other people, we are perceived as untrust­ worthy. People dislike those who have this habit of chattering, and avoid their presence. These days, those who are engaged in this not only waste time and energy but also run up a big phone bill. In this way, we waste important time. In contrast, great Dharma practitio­ ners go to the mountains by themselves and stay in retreat for years. Instead of chattering, they contemplate the meaning of the precious Dharma teachings and calm their minds.

Paying too much attention to other things may become a distraction. As Dharma Lord Gampopa says, if we don’t practice Dharma properly, Dharma may cause rebirth in a lower realm. This doesn’t mean Dharma itself was the cause of rebirth in a lower realm, but if we misuse or don’t know how to employ Dharma practice, that becomes a cause of lower rebirth. Gaining skills and knowledge along with bodhicitta brings a better condition in this lifetime and in the future. It makes us better human beings.
